Travel Tips for Your Amsterdam Adventure

Getting Around:

Amsterdam Quick Travel Guide - Bicycles are the most popular mode of transportation for getting around the city.

Getting around Amsterdam is remarkably convenient, thanks to its comprehensive and efficient transit system that includes trains, buses, and ride-sharing services like Uber.

You can also take your time and walk all over the city, as we did.  Walking through Amsterdam’s charming streets offers a unique and intimate perspective of the area’s rich history and vibrant culture.

Amsterdam is also known for being one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. I highly recommend renting a bike. Not only does it provide an immersive local experience, but it also allows you to navigate the city’s extensive cycling paths.

Of course, the best part is not only economical but also eco-friendly, enhancing your overall experience of the city. I believe you will love exploring this gorgeous city on a bicycle.

In addition to biking and walking, Amsterdam’s public transportation system is reliable and user-friendly. We love it because it makes it easy to travel across the city with minimal hassle.

Alternatively, the city’s public transportation system is efficient and easy to navigate. Ferries and canal cruises can be fun and interesting ways to see Amsterdam. For a more scenic route, consider taking a ferry across the IJ River or a canal cruise.

These water-based transportation options offer a unique and picturesque way to see the city from a different vantage point, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to your visit.

Best Time to Visit Amsterdam:

Amsterdam is beautiful all year round, but if you want to make the most of your trip, I recommend visiting in the spring or summer. This is when you can enjoy longer days and warmer weather, perfect for walking or biking around the city. My husband and I had a ball visiting Amsterdam in June.

Since Amsterdam is a city, even the fall and winter can still be magical times to enjoy it. Another thing to remember when planning your trip is that visiting Amsterdam in the Spring or visiting Fall will also mean the city will be less crowded.

Best Areas to Stay

Amsterdam Quick Travel Guide

Amsterdam has some of the most amazing accommodations you will find. The vast canal system is a UNESCO World Heritage site in itself. Amsterdam is such a wildly diverse city that it depends on what you want.  To have easy access to most attractions you will want to see it is best to stay close to the city center.

Here are some guidelines on which neighborhoods are the best places to stay. Each offers a unique vibe and easy access to main attractions.

  • Westerpark – Tourists or first-timers
  • Oud Zuid – Budget travellers
  • De Pijp – Partying and nightlife
  • Jordaan – Cool area to stay
  • Plantage – Families

What to Pack for Amsterdam

When packing for Amsterdam, it’s important to consider the weather conditions that may occur during your trip. Here are some essential items I recommend to pack:

  • Comfortable walking shoes: With so much to see and explore in Amsterdam, you’ll want to pack comfortable footwear.
  • Layers of clothing: As the weather can be unpredictable, make sure to pack layers such as jackets, sweaters, and scarves. In my experience, it can still be cool in Amsterdam at times in the summer months.
  • Rain gear: Amsterdam is known for its rain showers, so be sure to bring a waterproof jacket or umbrella.
  • Adapters/converters: If you’re coming from a different country or continent, remember to bring adapters or converters for your electronic devices.
  • Cash/credit cards: While most places in Amsterdam accept credit cards, it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases or places that don’t accept cards.
  • Medications: Be sure to pack any necessary medications, as well as copies of prescriptions and medical documents, just in case.

The Perfect Two Days in Amsterdam Itinerary

Things to see and do are plentiful in Amsterdam, and depending on the length of your stay, you may be able to see most of the highlights. If you’re like us and only have a few days in town, you must pick the tops on your list.

We wanted to visit Anne Frank’s House, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Rijksmuseum. Additionally, we also made sure to take a canal cruise. We were also lucky enough to happen upon a cool Music Festival in Vondelpark, which was hoot, so don’t be afraid to modify this itinerary for spur-of-the-moment fun!

Day 1: Exploring History and Culture

Morning: Anne Frank House

First, you must visit to the Anne Frank House. This poignant museum offers an intimate glimpse into the world of Anne Frank and her family during World War II.

Ann Frank’s House is the one museum I believe every person should visit. It is a modest museum, to say the least, but the most emotionally and thought-provoking one I have ever visited. It is captivating to remember how a young teenage girl shared her story with the world after she died on the pages of her diary.

If you go, be sure to purchase your tickets online at Anne Frank’s House in advance. While tickets are available for purchase each day at 9:00 a.m., they are gone in an instant.

Mid-Morning: Van Gogh Museum

Amsterdam Quick Travel Guide

Next, head to the Van Gogh Museum to admire the largest collection of Vincent van Gogh’s masterpieces. The museum provides a comprehensive look at the artist’s life and work, showcasing everything from his early sketches to his famous sunflower series.

When we visited, we thought it was lovely and gave a thorough understanding of Van Gogh’s appreciation and love of art. Van Gogh’s determination to learn and improve his style from the artists that inspired him is impressive.  It was interesting to take his life journey and see how his art evolved.

As previouly metioned for Anne Frank’s House, be sure to purchase your Van Gogh Museum tickets in advance because they sell out quickly.

Lunch: Pancakes Amsterdam

After a morning of exploring these wonderful museums, treat yourself at Pancakes Amsterdam. Known for their delicious and creative takes on Dutch pancakes, this spot is perfect for refueling.

Pancake Amsterdam features sweet and savory pancake options, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy. My personal favorite was the goat cheese and spinach pancake becasue it was a savory delight!

Pancake Amsterdam has multiple locations throughtout the city to make it easy to find.

Afternoon: Rijksmuseum

Continue your artistic journey with a visit to the Rijksmuseum. Home to an extensive collection of Dutch art and history, including masterpieces like Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch.” This museum is an absolute must-see. Again, booking tickets in advance is highly recommended.

Amsterdam is home to numerous museums, and I appreciate the city’s love of art and history and its meaningful sharing with its visitors. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are two of the most popular.

Evening: Canal Tour

Amsterdam - A canal boat cruise is a great way to explore the city

If you’re not too tired, take a scenic canal tour in the evening. I recommend a canal cruise to enjoy the extensive canals in Amsterdam, and there are many to choose from. Choices range from single-hour tours for the highlights, which cost between 12 and 16 euros per person, or hop-on-hop-off boat options, and there are even dinner cruises.

Amsterdam’s canals are iconic, and there’s no better way to experience the city than from the water. Opt for an evening cruise to see the city lights reflecting off the water—it’s truly magical. The canal cruise was a definite favorite activity of ours.

Dinner: De Kas Restaurant

End your day with a delightful dinner at De Kas Restaurant. Located in a greenhouse, De Kas offers farm-to-table dining with ingredients sourced daily from their own garden. The menu changes seasonally, ensuring a fresh and unique dining experience. While there are many excellent restaurants in Amsterdam, De Kas is a unique hidden gem.

Day 2: Discovering Local Gems

Morning: Dam Square and Royal Palace

Amsterdam - A top place to visit is the Amsterdam Royal Palace

Start your second day at Dam Square, the heart of Amsterdam. Dam Square is usually filled with musicians, performers and more interesting entertainment. Indeed it is a great place to people watch.

Then head over to the Royal Palace, a magnificent building steeped in history. Originally constructed in the 17th century as the city’s town hall, it now serves as a venue for royal receptions and state ceremonies. Take your time to wander through its grand halls and opulent chambers, each adorned with exquisite artworks and rich architectural details, offering a glimpse into the regal splendor of Dutch royalty.

What makes this palace so unique is the location. It is built on Dam Square in Amsterdam Central, the most popular meeting place in all of Amsterdam. Indeed, it is a great place to hang out, and people-watch!

Take a Mid-Morning Walking Tour of Amsterdam

Join a walking tour to uncover Amsterdam’s hidden gems. Many tours cover different aspects of the city, from its rich history to its contemporary culture. It’s a great way to get an insider’s perspective and discover spots you might otherwise miss.

If you enjoy taking photographs, a walking tour is an ideal way to to get up close and personal with some of the prettiest places in Amsterdam.

Lunch: Amsterdam Food Tour

For lunch, how about an Amsterdam Food Tour? These tours allow you to sample local delicacies like stroopwafels, herring, and Dutch cheese while learning about the city’s culinary history. It’s a feast for both your stomach and your mind! I mean, who doesn’t love food?

Afternoon: Red Light District

Afternoon: Red Light District

During the afternoon, take a stroll through the Red Light District. Known for its vibrant nightlife and historic architecture, it’s a fascinating area to explore. While visiting this unique neighborhood, be respectful and mindful of the local customs and culture.

Of course, this area is not very child-friendly, but the red light district is one of the main tourist attractions of this vibrant city. Additionally, it is a thriving bar and nightclub area with seemingly endless restaurants and coffee shops. This is one of the more interesting places in Amsterdam.

Evening: Vondelpark

Unwind with a relaxing walk through Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s largest and most famous park. It’s the perfect place to hang out and relax, enjoy some greenery, and perhaps have a picnic if the weather is nice.

Exploring the green spaces in Amsterdam really allows you to experience just how beautiful this city is. Not to mention when you get off the beaten path, you never know what magical wonders you might find.

Dinner: Local Eatery

For your final meal in Amsterdam, choose a cozy local eatery. Amsterdam is full of charming restaurants offering a range of international cuisines. Ask a local for a recommendation or simply wander until something catches your eye.

When I travel, I love to take a chance on places that the locals love. By doing this, my husband and I discovered Kapsalon. Kapsalon is a fast-food dish that begins with French fries on the bottom, topped with döner meat covered with Gouda cheese and heated. Next, it is topped with shredded lettuce, garlic sauce, and sambal hot sauce.

Kapsalon was invented by Turkish immigrants and combines Dutch elements to make it multicultural and unique!

Things to Consider When Visiting Amsterdam

If you’re planning a trip to Amsterdam, there are a few things to consider before hopping on the plane. The beautiful city of Amsterdam has something for everyone. From picturesque canals and charming architecture to vibrant nightlife and world-renowned museums. Here are some tips and considerations to remember to make the most of your visit to this beautiful city.

Accommodations

Amsterdam offers a wide range of options for all budget levels. I love that you can find anything from luxurious hotels to cozy bed and breakfasts. Plus, you’ll find plenty of choices in different neighborhoods throughout the city. However, since Amsterdam is a popular tourist destination, booking your accommodations in advance to avoid any last-minute hassle. Additionally, if you’re on a budget, consider staying outside the city center as prices are lower there.

Transportation

One of the best ways to explore Amsterdam is by foot or bike. The city is relatively small and has an extensive network of bike paths, making it easy and convenient for visitors to get around. If you plan on using public transportation, consider purchasing a multi-day pass or the I Amsterdam Card, which offers unlimited public transport and discounts on attractions and activities.

Weather

The weather in Amsterdam can be unpredictable, with frequent rain showers throughout the year. Pack an umbrella or raincoat and wear comfortable walking shoes, as you’ll probably be doing a lot of walking while exploring the city. Also, be mindful that summers can get quite hot, so it’s always a good idea to carry sunscreen and stay hydrated.

Cultural Differences

As with any new destination, you must familiarize yourself with the local culture and customs before visiting Amsterdam. The Dutch are known for their directness and may seem blunt to some visitors. Additionally, smoking is allowed in designated areas only, and the possession of drugs is illegal. Always respect the laws and customs of countries you visit to avoid any issues during your stay.

Safety

Amsterdam is generally a safe city, but it’s always wise to take precautions when traveling. Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas, and be wary of pickpockets. It is also a good idea to avoid walking alone at night in less populated areas and stick to well-lit main streets when possible.
