Overview of Venice
Venice is a city located in northeastern Italy. It is famous for its intricate canal system that runs throughout the city. The city is built on a group of 118 small islands. These islands are separated by open water and canals and linked by bridges.
As per Britannica.com, “Venice is unique environmentally, architecturally, and historically. In its days as a republic, the city was styled la Serenissima (“the most serene” or “sublime”). It remains a major Italian port in the northern Adriatic Sea and is one of the world’s oldest tourist and cultural centers.”
Venice is truly captivating and deserves to be on everyone’s bucket.
Best Times to Visit Venice
Venice, Italy is a city that has so much to offer visitors regardless of the time of year. However, there are certain periods when visiting Venice is more ideal than others.
The best times to visit Venice are from late September to early November and from April to early June. During these periods, the weather is pleasant, the crowds are fewer, and the prices are lower. Visiting outside of these periods may mean having to deal with large crowds and high prices. This is particularly true during the peak summer months.
Additionally, the city is often flooded during the winter months, making it difficult to get around. Therefore, it is important to consider the time of year when planning a trip to Venice to make the most of your visit.

Top Instagram Spots in Venice
Piazza San Marco ( St. Mark’s Square)
Of course, it may not come as a surprise to you that the Piazza San Marco, also known as St. Mark’s Square, is one of the most Instagrammable places in Venice. I mean, it is one of the most iconic and picturesque locations in Venice.
But what makes it one of the best Instagram spots in Venice? Perhaps it’s the stunning view of the St. Mark’s Basilica or maybe the understated beauty of Doge’s Palace. My favorite was the St. Mark’s Clocktower, which dates back to the 15th century. In addition, you will find St. Mark’s Bell Tower. You can go to the top and enjoy magnificent views of St. Mark’s Square and Venice. The ticket price is 12 euros for anyone over 6 years of age. You can buy tickets here.
Whatever the reason, a visit to Piazza San Marco is sure to result in some amazing photos, but do keep in mind this is a very busy spot. To capture the best shots you may want to consider coming early morning around sunrise or even around sunset because the colors of the sky overtake your photo more than the crowds.
Canal view from St. Mark’s Square
This stunning view is one of the most Instagrammable places in the city, and for good reason. From here, you can have a full panoramic view of the Grand Canal. Not to mention views of charming gondolas shimmering in the water at sunset.
Additionally, you have gorgeous views of the Basilica of Santa Maria Della Salute and the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore. The unique architecture of these buildings provides a stunning backdrop for your photographs.
Whether you’re a professional photographer or simply a tourist looking to capture a moment, the Canal view from St. Mark’s Square is a must-see destination that is sure to leave you mesmerized.
Special note, this location and the next one can be found at Traghetto Gondole Molo ( second stop) on the map included below.
Gondolas at St. Mark’s Square
The Gondolas at St. Mark’s Square are one of the most popular Instagram spots in Venice. These iconic boats, with their sleek design and distinctive black color, offer a charming and picturesque backdrop for photos.
Since St. Mark’s Square is a popular spot for tourists, this is a busy spot for gondolas coming and going. Often you can snap a wonderful photo of the gondolas floating in the canals, with historic architecture and the beautiful Venetian landscape in the background. This shot is particularly stunning at sunset.
The Bridge of Sighs
Undoubtedly the Bridge of Sighs is one of the best Instagram spots in Venice. I mean, the view from the bridge itself is stunning. The historic architecture and gondolas passing by create a picturesque scene.
As a matter of fact, the bridge has a fascinating history as well. It was used to transport prisoners from the Doge’s Palace to the nearby prison. Making this view one of the last things they saw. This adds an element of intrigue and depth to any photo taken from or of the bridge.
Keep in mind that the location of the bridge is within the heart of Venice’s tourist hub, so it does get crowded.
There are less crowded options, like taking pictures from inside the Bridge of Sighs, which is definitely unique. Or step off the Ponte della Paglia and go to the platform underneath and to the right of the Bridge of Sighs. It can be busy as well, but after you wait for your turn you will get lovely unobstructed views of the Bridge of Sighs.
Ponte dell Accademia
The Ponte dell’Academia is one of the best photography spots in Venice. The bridge connects the San Marco and Dorsoduro districts and offers breathtaking views of the Grand Canal.
Uniquely different from the other three bridges that cross the Grand Canal, because it is a completely wooden bridge. Also, the surrounding neighborhood offers some excellent photo opportunities as well. And you are close to the Gallerie dell’Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
It is a great place to capture a selfie with the Grand Canal and the iconic dome of the Santa Maria della Salute church in the background. Plus, the Ponte dell’Academia is not nearly as crowded as the Rialto Bridge.
Church of San Giorgio Maggiore
The beautiful Church of San Giorgio Maggiore is undoubtedly one of the best Instagram spots in Venice. With its stunning location on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, it offers a wonderful perspective for you to photograph Venice.
From the top of the bell tower, you can capture panoramic views of the city. This would include St. Mark’s Square and the bustling Grand Canal. There is a nominal $5 charge to access the bell tower, but it’s worth it.
The church’s interior is equally breathtaking, featuring beautiful frescoes and intricate marble work. When we visited, there was a beautiful art installation taking place, which made it more interesting. In addition to the church itself, there is a small lighthouse at the base of the tiny harbor. And the sailboats in the harbor are photo-worthy.
Hidden Instagram spots in Venice
Ponte degli Scalzi
Ponte degli Scalzi, also known as the “Bridge of the Barefoot”, is another of the four bridges that cross the Grand Canal. It is a beautiful bridge that provides a lovely view of the Grand Canal and the surrounding architecture, making it one of the best Instagram spots in Venice.
The bridge gets its nickname from the Santa Maria di Nazareth, the Carmelite church that is located on the north side of the bridge. The Carmelite monks led a very quiet and simple life and wore sandals instead of shoes to demonstrate their poverty. (Reference)
The bridge is especially enchanting during the golden hour when the sun sets, and the sky turns into a burst of colors. The bridge’s unique architecture, combined with the reflections of the canal and the surrounding buildings, makes for a perfect photo opportunity.
Scala Contarini del Bovolo
The Scala Contarini del Bovolo is another of the most Instagramable spots in Venice due to its unique and beautiful architecture. Located in the San Marco district, this spiral staircase features a total of nine arches and is a perfect example of Venetian Gothic style.
The stunning combination of red brick and white marble creates a visually striking contrast. Thus making it a popular photo spot for tourists and locals alike.
Additionally, the view from the top of the staircase offers a panoramic view of the city, providing yet another reason why it is a must-see destination for any visitor to Venice.
Libreria Acqua Alta
Libreria Acqua Alta is a fascinating bookstore located in Venice, Italy, and famous for its unique and picturesque atmosphere. The bookstore is home to thousands of books that are displayed on shelves, tables, and even in boats. There are even some books in bathtubs and a gondola. Making it an ideal location for taking fun pictures.
The store’s most popular feature is the staircase made of old encyclopedias that lead to a small platform, offering wonderful views of the surrounding canals. This could be quite possibly the most Instagrammable place in all of Venice!
Additionally, the shop is home to a few cats that roam around, adding to the charm of the place. They were once strays, but are now family. The store’s location, combined with its eccentricities, makes it one of the best places to take pictures in Venice.
Santa Maria della Salute Viewpoint (Gondola Dogana Vallaresso)
The Santa Maria della Salute Viewpoint, also known as the Gondola Dogana Vallaresso, is also one of the best Instagram spots in Venice. It is located on the Riva degli Schiavoni, a wide promenade that runs along the lagoon from St. Marks Square.
This viewpoint is particularly popular during sunset, when the sky turns into a palette of warm hues, painting the city in a golden light.
The Santa Maria della Salute church, which dominates the view, adds a touch of grandeur to any Instagram post. Whether it’s a selfie or a landscape shot, the Santa Maria della Salute Viewpoint promises to provide an unforgettable backdrop for your Instagram feed.
Instagram-worthy experiences in Venice
Venice is a city that is full of beautiful and unique experiences that are perfect for Instagram.
One of the best experiences that you can capture on camera is a ride on a gondola through the city’s iconic canals. You can also take a picture of the stunning architecture of St. Mark’s Basilica or the Doge’s Palace.
But my favorite Instagram-worthy experience is to get lost among the canals in Venice. You may or may not see a famous landmark, but the whole city is a famous landmark. There are so many hidden gems to be found that will make your Instagram fans rave! So I encourage you to go and find those hidden corners.
Finally, don’t forget to capture the stunning views of the city from the top of the Campanile di San Marco. The view offers panoramic views of Venice and its surrounding islands. Campanile di San Marco is St. Mark’s Bell Tower which is mentioned above.
