Niagara Falls, a natural wonder of the world, is undoubtedly on most people’s travel bucket list. And for good reason. Not only is it a wonderful place, but it is a significant part of American history. Obviously, the falls themselves are the number one reason to visit. Niagara Falls is a national treasure for both the U.S. and Canada. They are spectacular to view and worth the trip to visit. In this two-day Niagara Falls Itinerary, we’ll explore some excellent options to make the most of your visit.

The Falls area is associated with early Native Americans, European exploration, the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Underground Railroad. Additionally, the Falls has been an essential site for hydroelectric power and ancillary industries.
The falls were created 12,000 years ago, as water flowed into the Niagara River from the North American Great Lakes. While Niagara Falls is an essential power source, it is also a popular tourist attraction. It’s interesting to note that to preserve the balance, water flow is reduced at night and redirected to sources where energy is generated. During the day, the restriction is lifted, making the Falls more magnificent for tourists.
Did you know that Niagara Falls is actually three distinct waterfalls? The three falls are the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls (because it resembled a bride’s veil), and the largest, Horseshoe Falls ( aka the Canadian Falls). The three falls combine to produce the most considerable water flow rate of any waterfall in the world.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit the Niagara Falls area is between May and October. These months offer the best weather for your trip. That said, it can be hectic on either side of the Falls in the summer months. So, if you dislike crowds, I recommend planning your trip in May, September, or October. During these months, the crowds are lighter, and the weather is quite beautiful.
Can You Do Niagara Falls in Two Days?
Yes, you can, but you probably can’t do all of the experiences in this post. Of course, two days are plenty of time to hit the highlights and must-do’s at Niagara Falls. Extending your trip would be ideal if you want to do more or take some day trips from Niagara Falls.
Day 1 – Niagara Falls Itinerary
Morning:
Niagara Falls State Park
Start your day at Niagara Falls State Park. One of my favorite experiences was wandering through Niagara Falls State Park. It’s absolutely lovely and offers a more authentic feeling of the beauty of Niagara Falls, making it less touristy than the Canadian side. If you enjoy photography, this is a great place to have your camera.
If you are an avid outdoor lover, you will be well rewarded if you visit. The park covers an impressive 400 acres of wanderlust for the outdoor types. You can walk, run, hike, or bike along the numerous trails that range from easy to difficult. Many of the trails are accessible by all, and there is a trolley available as well.
There are also places to stop and enjoy a picnic or purchase food items. Not to mention an observation area that gives panoramic views of the park. Fun fact: this park has the distinction of being the very first state park in the USA.
Observation Tower
From the observation tower, you will get a panoramic view of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and, on a clear day, even the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side.
Take a Ride on the Maid of the Mist
Experience the exhilaration of getting up close and personal with the falls on the iconic Maid of the Mist boat tour. This is a bucket list item you simply can’t miss. Feel the mist on your face as you capture some of your best shots of the falls.
My favorite activity was a ride on the Maid of the Mist. For more than 150 years, this boat tour has taken travelers on an up close and personal experience with the falls.
Afternoon:
Experience the Cave of the Winds
Another excellent option is the Cave of the Winds tour, which allows you to descend 175 feet into the Niagara Gorge and experience the power of the Falls. The tour takes you along wooden pathways to Hurricane Deck, where you are just a few feet from the Bridal Veil Falls.
Terrapin Point
Head to Terrapin Point for another stunning viewpoint of the Horseshoe Falls. It’s an excellent spot for a picnic or a brief rest while enjoying the mesmerizing views.
Evening:
Enjoy Niagara Falls Illumination
Of course, when you think Niagara Falls couldn’t be any more spectacular, the sun goes down. This means the lights come on! I can’t express enough how magnificent Niagara Falls Illumination is. Niagara Falls lit up after dark is simply stunning! I think it was the best thing to see and do in Niagara Falls.
You will not want to miss this, and while I have added it to Day 1, there is no reason not to do it on Day 2 either!
Day 2: Niagara Falls Itinerary
On the second day of this Niagara Falls Itinerary, I have left it open to multiple options depending on how you feel. Since my experience was primarily on the USA side of Niagara Falls, it might be helpful to let you know what is also available on the Canadian side. Plus there are a few more choices for the USA side to consider as well.

Niagara Gorge Discovery Center
Located in Niagara Falls State Park, this interactive and educational facility is a great place to visit before you head out on the hiking trails.
Niagara Adventure Theater
Also located in Niagara Falls State Park, the theater plays a 30-minute movie called “The Niagara: Miracles, Myths & Magic Movie.” You learn about the history of the falls and some exciting stories about incredible people, too.
Niagara Aquarium
Explore the Niagara Aquarium and discover a diverse range of marine life. It’s a fantastic spot for families and anyone interested in marine biology.
Old Niagara Fort
Step back in time with a visit to Old Niagara Fort. This historic site offers a fascinating glimpse into the area’s military history and provides stunning views of the Niagara River.
Things to Do on the Canadian Side for Your Niagara Falls Itinerary
Visit Skylon Tower for Panoramic Views
Cross over to the Canadian side and head up 775 feet to the top of Skylon Tower for breathtaking views of the American and Horseshoe Falls. On a clear day, visibility is up to 80 miles away! In addition to the epic view, you can also enjoy a meal.
Clifton Hill
Clifton Hill is a terrific option for families visiting with children. This is where you will find the Niagara SkyWheel, go-carts, putt-putt golf, and more. So if you’re looking for family-friendly fun or want to indulge in classic carnival-style games and activities, this is the place to go.
White Water Walk
For a unique perspective of the Niagara River, take a walk along the White Water Walk. This boardwalk trail offers stunning views of the river and its intense rapids.
Take a Helicopter Ride over Niagara Falls
Take a helicopter ride over the falls for the ultimate aerial view of Niagara Falls. This thrilling experience will give you a whole new appreciation for this natural wonder’s sheer power and beauty.
Visit Niagara-on-the-Lake
If you’re looking for a more relaxed and scenic activity, consider visiting the charming town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Located just a short drive from Niagara Falls, this quaint town offers beautiful views of Lake Ontario and is known for its wineries, shops, and restaurants.
Go on a Wine Tour
The Niagara Falls area is also known for its wineries, and a wine tour is a great way to experience them.

Questions About Niagara Falls
How to Get to Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls is also relatively easy to get to. Buffalo Niagara International Airport is the closest airport in Buffalo, New York. Whether you rent a car, grab a taxi, or an Uber, it’s just a little over 30 minutes to get to the falls. Flights to Buffalo are often cheaper than those to Toronto, so that’s a plus, too.
So Which of Niagara Falls is Better, the Canada or America?
Which side of Niagara Falls is better? Undoubtedly, the Canadian side of Niagara Falls is more popular. There are more hotel options on the Canadian side. Some even have views overlooking the Falls. The Canadian side also has a better angle for seeing Horseshoe Falls. Of course, if you take the Maid of the Mist boat tour I mentioned, you will have gorgeous views of all three falls.
Do You Need a Passport to Visit Niagara Falls?
While you can see all three Falls very well from the American side, the only way to get a full, frontal view of Horseshoe Falls ( the Canadian Falls) is to cross the Rainbow Bridge on the Canadian side.
American adults crossing the border into Canada will need a passport book or passport card. Enhanced driver licenses, which are state-issued and provide proof of identity and U.S. citizenship when crossing the U.S. border in a vehicle, are another option. Of course, these are only available to New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Washington, and Vermont residents. Children must have a certified birth certificate and a note from the parents if they are not present.
