Best Time to Visit Virginia Beach
The best time to visit Virginia Beach to experience all the oceanfront culture is from late May to early September. Of course, this is also peak season, so there will be larger crowds and higher hotel prices. Another great time to visit that will be better for your pocketbook is between March, mid-May, mid-September, and November. Prices will be more budget-friendly, and temperatures will still be pretty comfortable. Do keep in mind that November varies, and it can get cool.
Instagrammable Places in Virginia Beach
Virginia Beach Oceanfront
No trip to Virginia Beach is complete without a visit to the oceanfront. My favorite place in Virginia Beach is home to a lively boardwalk, amusement park, delicious restaurants, and more.
But what makes it truly special for photographers is the stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean. Whether capturing shots during sunrise or sunset or just taking fun selfies with your friends against the crashing waves, the Virginia Beach oceanfront is a must-visit spot for any photography enthusiast.

After enjoying the gorgeous ocean views, you should spend some time exploring the Virginia Beach Boardwalk. Along the boardwalk, you will find some of the best photo spots in Virginia Beach.
Some great interest points include the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier, catching surfers on the waves, and sandcastles on the beach! Other cool places for photos include the Norwegian Lady Statue, the Naval Aviation Monument, and numerous fun art exhibits scattered along the boardwalk.
Honestly, there is no limit to the photo opportunities here, as long as you have a terrific eye and imagination!
Surf & Rescue Museum
Head to the Surf & Rescue Museum on the boardwalk for a unique and historical photo opportunity. This museum showcases the rich history of surfing and lifeguarding in Virginia Beach through a collection of fascinating artifacts and photographs.
The location and the beautifully preserved historic building make it the perfect spot for selfies, too!
King Neptune
Another one of the best Instagrammable places in Virginia Beach is the iconic King Neptune statue. This gorgeous creation has become a symbol of the city. Standing at 34 feet tall, this bronze statue depicts Neptune, the Roman god of the sea.
You can find King Neptune at the entrance of Neptune Festival Park on 31st Street. This photo opportunity is excellent with its larger-than-life size and stunning ocean backdrop.
Atlantic Fun Park
After a fun day at the beach, you can head over to the Atlantic Fun Park for evening fun! The Park has a variety of rides that the whole family will enjoy. Additionally, its an excellent place to capture some fun and silly photos.
Don’t miss the 100-foot-tall Ferris wheel for spectacular views of the Oceanfront. Plus, there are kiddie rides, the rock wall, Spring Ride, Flying Bobs, Paratrooper, and more.
Of course, don’t forget to stop at Kohr Brothers for fabulous frozen custard after.
Vibe District
One of the best photo spots in Virginia Beach is the fantastic murals in the Vibe District of the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. These colorful and creative murals are a treat and make the perfect backdrop for your photos.
Since 2015, the city has worked with over 150 artists to create over 100 works of art in the public domain areas. Plus, these gorgeous murals are free and accessible to anyone 24 hours a day.
Hidden Gems in Virginia Beach
Virginia Aquarium and Marine Life Center
Do you love marine life? If so, the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center should be on your list of must-visit places in Virginia Beach. This aquarium boasts over 300 species of animals and offers visitors a chance to get up close with sea turtles, sharks, rays, and other aquatic creatures.
You can even book a private photo shoot for your special occasions. The after-hours photo shoots are perfect for graduation, family photos, and more! In addition to all this, there is an incredible Adventure Park where you can enjoy climbing and ziplining. What a terrific opportunity for great photos.
Mount Trashmore
Of course, one of my favorite places is Mount Trashmore. I spent a lot of time here as a child, and it’s even better now. Indeed, there is something for everyone here, and it’s an excellent place for fun photography.
Running up and down the mountain makes for some cute and exciting photos. You can also capture adorable images of your children on the playgrounds. The stunning lake is also Instagram-worthy.
Head over to the epic skate park for some fantastic shots, and you can also capture some colorful kits flying in the sky.
Whether you want an active outdoor adventure or a quiet picnic date, Mount Trashmore is an excellent choice. Mount Trashmore is one of the most beautiful places to see in Virginia Beach.
Town Center
Just minutes from the Oceanfront, the exciting, vibrant Town Center of Virginia Beach towers over the landscape, offering an expansive and impressive assortment of upscale shops, restaurants, and more.
Town Center offers many options for entertainment year-round. Not only can you enjoy outdoor concerts and wine and beer festivals, but there is a weekly farmers market during the summer and much more.
You can easily find fountains, artistic creations, flowers, and other curious spots to capture unique and exciting photographs. Town Center is one of the best photo spots in Virginia Beach,
Battleship Wisconsin
Next on our list of best photo spots in Virginia Beach is the Battleship Wisconsin. Battleship Wisconsin is one of the largest and last battleships ever built by the U.S. Navy.
If you’re on a budget, you can take a self-guided tour of two levels of the ship, including the main deck, officers’ wardroom, galley, mess deck, chapel, and sailors’ berthing.
If you want to see the ship’s bridges, the Captain’s stateroom, the Admiral’s stateroom, and the Combat Engagement Center, you must buy a Gold ticket, which includes a guided tour of these spaces.
Don’t forget to take photos on the deck with the beautiful Virginia waterfront as your backdrop. It’s especially charming at sunset.
Fort Story and the Cape Henry Lighthouse
Another of the hidden gems in Virginia Beach is Fort Story. Located on an active Army base, it’s not well-known to tourists…so it’s an excellent option for solitude! This is a favorite photography location of mine because of the beautiful Cape Henry lighthouses.
First, you have the original Cape Henry Lighthouse of 1792, a unique and stunning brick structure. It’s the first federally funded project of the brand new United States government. Its shining light protected seafarers until 1881.
The second Cape Henry Lighthouse of 1881 is a stately black-and-white structure overseen by the U.S. Coast Guard. Because it is in daily service, there are no tours available. Of course, that does not keep you from photographing the lighthouse. You can capture some excellent shots of this lighthouse from the original Cape Henry lighthouse.
While you’re here, you can also view old military vehicles, chase crabs, and enjoy the beach practically to yourself!
First Landing State Park
On April 26, 1607, the very first English settlers landed here and established the first elective government in English America. They then decided to move further up the James River to establish Jamestown.
First Landing State Park is not only a way to commemorate this historic location, but it is also a nature lover’s paradise. With over 2,700 acres of wetlands and forests, it’s no wonder this park is one of the most popular photo spots in the city. There is plenty of beautiful nature here to provide a stunning backdrop for your photoshoots. You can also capture beautiful shots of Chesapeake Bay from the park’s beach.
In addition to camping cabins and campsites, there are picnic areas and a swimming beach. You can also find boat ramps, kayak rentals, and tours, as well.

Ocean Breeze Waterpark
I’m not entirely sure that Ocean Breeze Waterpark is one of the best photo spots in Virginia Beach, but it is an excellent place for families to enjoy!
Enjoy yourself at Ocean Breeze Waterpark, racing down thrilling water slides and braving the wave pool. Or, if you prefer, floating down the lazy river and just relaxing poolside. There are many fun photo opportunities to be found here.

Since opening in 1927, the Cavalier has hosted ten presidents and countless prominent and well-known celebrities.
Today, the hotel is as stunning and beautiful as its original grandeur and is on the list of the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to the luxurious rooms and suites, there are three restaurants and a distillery on the property as well.
