- Book tickets in advance for Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, and Rijksmuseum because same-day availability is limited and sellouts are common.
- Getting around Amsterdam is easiest on foot, by bike, or by public transit; canal cruises and ferries add a scenic way to see the city.
- For a convenient base, stay near the city center, neighborhood options include Westerpark (first-timers), Oud Zuid (budget), De Pijp (nightlife), Jordaan (stylish), and Plantage (families).

We wanted to visit Anne Frank’s House, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Rijksmuseum. Additionally, we also made sure to take a canal cruise. We were also lucky enough to happen upon a cool Music Festival in Vondelpark, which was hoot, so don’t be afraid to modify this itinerary for spur-of-the-moment fun!

Morning: Anne Frank House
First, you must visit to the Anne Frank House. This poignant museum offers an intimate glimpse into the world of Anne Frank and her family during World War II.
Ann Frank’s House is the one museum I believe every person should visit. It is a modest museum, to say the least, but the most emotionally and thought-provoking one I have ever visited. It is captivating to remember how a young teenage girl shared her story with the world after she died on the pages of her diary.
If you go, be sure to purchase your tickets online at Anne Frank’s House in advance. While tickets are available for purchase each day at 9:00 a.m., they are gone in an instant.
Mid-Morning: Van Gogh Museum
Next, head to the Van Gogh Museum to admire the largest collection of Vincent van Gogh’s masterpieces. The museum provides a comprehensive look at the artist’s life and work, showcasing everything from his early sketches to his famous sunflower series.
When we visited, we thought it was lovely and gave a thorough understanding of Van Gogh’s appreciation and love of art. Van Gogh’s determination to learn and improve his style from the artists that inspired him is impressive. It was interesting to take his life journey and see how his art evolved.
As previouly metioned for Anne Frank’s House, be sure to purchase your Van Gogh Museum tickets in advance because they sell out quickly.
Lunch: Pancakes Amsterdam
After a morning of exploring these wonderful museums, treat yourself at Pancakes Amsterdam. Known for their delicious and creative takes on Dutch pancakes, this spot is perfect for refueling.
Pancake Amsterdam features sweet and savory pancake options, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy. My personal favorite was the goat cheese and spinach pancake becasue it was a savory delight!
Pancake Amsterdam has multiple locations throughtout the city to make it easy to find.
Afternoon: Rijksmuseum
Continue your artistic journey with a visit to the Rijksmuseum. Home to an extensive collection of Dutch art and history, including masterpieces like Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch.” This museum is an absolute must-see. Again, booking tickets in advance is highly recommended.
Amsterdam is home to numerous museums, and I appreciate the city’s love of art and history and its meaningful sharing with its visitors. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are two of the most popular.
Evening: Canal Tour
If you’re not too tired, take a scenic canal tour in the evening. I recommend a canal cruise to enjoy the extensive canals in Amsterdam, and there are many to choose from. Choices range from single-hour tours for the highlights, which cost between 12 and 16 euros per person, or hop-on-hop-off boat options, and there are even dinner cruises.
Amsterdam’s canals are iconic, and there’s no better way to experience the city than from the water. Opt for an evening cruise to see the city lights reflecting off the water—it’s truly magical. The canal cruise was a definite favorite activity of ours.
Dinner: De Kas Restaurant
End your day with a delightful dinner at De Kas Restaurant. Located in a greenhouse, De Kas offers farm-to-table dining with ingredients sourced daily from their own garden. The menu changes seasonally, ensuring a fresh and unique dining experience. While there are many excellent restaurants in Amsterdam, De Kas is a unique hidden gem.
Day 2: Discovering Local Gems
Morning (2 to 3 hours)
Van Gogh Museum
Vondelpark
Lunch (60 minutes)
Museum Quarter café
Afternoon (2 to 3 hours)
Nine Streets
Dam Square
Evening (2 hours)
Optional Red Light District walk or evening canal views
Morning: Dam Square and Royal Palace
Start your second day at Dam Square, the heart of Amsterdam. Dam Square is usually filled with musicians, performers and more interesting entertainment. Indeed it is a great place to people watch.
Then head over to the Royal Palace, a magnificent building steeped in history. Originally constructed in the 17th century as the city’s town hall, it now serves as a venue for royal receptions and state ceremonies. Take your time to wander through its grand halls and opulent chambers, each adorned with exquisite artworks and rich architectural details, offering a glimpse into the regal splendor of Dutch royalty.
What makes this palace so unique is the location. It is built on Dam Square in Amsterdam Central, the most popular meeting place in all of Amsterdam. Indeed, it is a great place to hang out, and people-watch!

Take a Mid-Morning Walking Tour of Amsterdam
Join a walking tour to uncover Amsterdam’s hidden gems. Many tours cover different aspects of the city, from its rich history to its contemporary culture. It’s a great way to get an insider’s perspective and discover spots you might otherwise miss.
If you enjoy taking photographs, a walking tour is an ideal way to to get up close and personal with some of the prettiest places in Amsterdam.
Lunch: Amsterdam Food Tour
For lunch, how about an Amsterdam Food Tour? These tours allow you to sample local delicacies like stroopwafels, herring, and Dutch cheese while learning about the city’s culinary history. It’s a feast for both your stomach and your mind! I mean, who doesn’t love food?

Afternoon: Red Light District
During the afternoon, take a stroll through the Red Light District. Known for its vibrant nightlife and historic architecture, it’s a fascinating area to explore. While visiting this unique neighborhood, be respectful and mindful of the local customs and culture.
Of course, this area is not very child-friendly, but the red light district is one of the main tourist attractions of this vibrant city. Additionally, it is a thriving bar and nightclub area with seemingly endless restaurants and coffee shops. This is one of the more interesting places in Amsterdam.
Evening: Vondelpark
Unwind with a relaxing walk through Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s largest and most famous park. It’s the perfect place to hang out and relax, enjoy some greenery, and perhaps have a picnic if the weather is nice.
Exploring the green spaces in Amsterdam really allows you to experience just how beautiful this city is. Not to mention when you get off the beaten path, you never know what magical wonders you might find.
Dinner: Local Eatery
For your final meal in Amsterdam, choose a cozy local eatery. Amsterdam is full of charming restaurants offering a range of international cuisines. Ask a local for a recommendation or simply wander until something catches your eye.
When I travel, I love to take a chance on places that the locals love. By doing this, my husband and I discovered Kapsalon. Kapsalon is a fast-food dish that begins with French fries on the bottom, topped with döner meat covered with Gouda cheese and heated. Next, it is topped with shredded lettuce, garlic sauce, and sambal hot sauce.
Kapsalon was invented by Turkish immigrants and combines Dutch elements to make it multicultural and unique!
