Birthplace of NASCAR

North Wilkesboro’s relationship with NASCAR is an interesting one, beginning with the birth of the sport in this very city. In 1947, local resident Enoch Staley visited a NASCAR race in South Carolina and was so inspired that he decided to build a speedway in North Wilkesboro. The North Wilkesboro Speedway opened a year later, hosting its first NASCAR event in 1948. I come here almost every time we visit, and it’s also a great place to find Christmas gifts.

Carolina Treasures On Main is located right across the street from Key City, and is a similar co-op retailer. They have an abundance of vintage items to keep you busy with nostalgia! Be careful though, you can spend hours here! It’s easy to get caught up with all the unique and vintage things you will find.

Catch a Show at the Historic Liberty Theatre

One of my favorite fun things to do in North Wilkesboro is to see a movie in a vintage theater. The Liberty Theatre, according to historical records has been at this location since the 1920s, but the building that stands currently was built in 1946 after a fire destroyed the original. The theatre offers newly released films for only $5 per person. Additionally, the feature movies in Spanish on Tuesdays, and they host free Kids movies every summer.

Explore Family Fun at The Block

Recently a new family-friendly attraction opened in North Wilkesboro called The Block. This innovative space is designed with something for everyone, ensuring every member of your family, from the little ones to the adults, is entertained. With an array of immersive activities, such as a trampoline park, Ninja Warrior Park, and a roller skating rink, the Block is the perfect destination for any family outing. Plus there is a combination park and play area specially designed for toddlers. Additionally, you can enjoy the Arcade and Cafe!

Annual Festivals

Certainly, other fun activities to experience are the annual festivals. North Wilkesboro has a vibrant festival scene that brings the community together and attracts visitors from far and wide. Here are some of the annual festivals you won’t want to miss:

Concerts on the Deck (June through October): During the summer months, the city hosts “Concerts on the Deck“. This popular event series sees local and touring bands performing at the Yadkin Valley Marketplace. With genres ranging from rock to country to jazz, there’s something for every music lover. You can enjoy these concerts on the third Saturday of each month from June to October.

Brushy Mountain Apple Festival (October): In the fall, the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival celebrates the region’s apple harvest with a day of fun and feasting. The festival features local vendors selling everything from fresh apples to apple pies, along with arts and crafts, live entertainment, and fun activities for kids.

MerleFest: Music fans won’t want to miss MerleFest, North Wilkesboro’s premier musical festival. Held every April at the Wilkes Community College campus, the event features a huge lineup of artists performing across multiple stages, so there’s something for everyone. Smoot Park is another of the best fun things for families in North Wilkesboro. The Park offers access to playgrounds, basketball courts, a skateboard park, and a swimming pool during the summer season

Memorial Park features baseball and softball fields, a concession stand and lighted tennis courts. Additionally there is access to the Yadkin River Greenway and covered BBQ/Chicken-Q grills for use by civic clubs, churches and other non-profit groups.

Stone Mountain State Park

Definitely a favorite of ours is Stone Mountain State Park. Not only is this one of North Carolina’s best kept secret, it is wonderful place for hikers, campers, fisherman and lovers of waterfalls. In addition to over 15 miles of trails of all levels of difficulty, fisherman love the abundance of trout and Stone Mountain Falls and Widows Creek Falls are truly natural beauties. Stone is perfect for a day trip or a camping weekend.

W. Kerr Scott Dam & Reservoir

Only a short 15 minute drive from North Wilkesboro is W. Kerr Scott Dam & Reservoir. Not only is the area beautiful, it also offers some awesome outdoor activities for recreational fun. In a addition to being a great day trip for families and outdoor enthusiasts, it’s also a great place to spend a week. Outdoor enthusiasts will love hiking, boating and the beautiful scenery. Kerr Scott is also know for its 40 miles of mountain biking trails. Notably the Warrior Creek Mountain Bike is known as one of the best mountain bike trails in North Carolina.
