In the early 1900’s the Yadkin River caused deadly and damaging flooding to Wilkseboro and surrounding communities. After numerous studies, the Dam was built to put a halt to much of the flooding. A successful collaboration with the US Army Corps of Engineers, allowed the state of North Carolina to build the Dam. Due to the success of the project, North Carolina has yet another place to visit for awesome outdoor activities. So let’s talk about what activities you can enjoy at W. Kerr Scott Dam.

One of the most popular awesome outdoor activities here is mountain biking. As a result, you can find some of the best mountain biking trails in the Blue Ridge along the scenic shores of the dam & reservoir. In addition, you can find another 40 miles of mountain biking trails at the Warrior Creek Campground, Dark Mountain Park and Visitor Assistance Center areas. By the way, the trails here are built by mountain bikers for mountain bikers. You can find a complete list of all the trails, as well as maps here.
Of Course, if there’s biking trails, then there are hiking trails. Miles of hiking trails surround the lake. These include the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. Boating & Fishing
This magnificent 1,475-acre reservoir also offers excellent boating, canoeing, and kayaking opportunities. Just another of the awesome outdoor activities you can enjoy here. There are seven boats ramps and three canoe launches for easy access to the lake. Additionally fisherman will love the numerous types of fish to catch at Kerr Scott. Not only can you catch channel catfish, large and smallmouth bass, bluegill, and spotted bass, but you may find hybrid striped bass and tiger muskellunge as well.
There are three campgrounds offering water and electric sites, as well as tent sites. They include Bandit’s Roost, Fort Hambly, as well as Warrior Creek. Facilities at each campground include a shower house, dump station, swim beach, basketball court, playgrounds as well as multi-purpose trails. In addition to this, Fort Hambly also offers a disc golf course, archery course, as well as a 900 seat Amphitheater. With this in mind, camping reservation are available and highly recommended. As was previously stated there are swim beaches at each of the campgrounds. However, Kerr Scott also offers awesome outdoor activities on a daily basis, so there is another swim beach available to day trippers. In addition to swimming, you are also welcome to snorkel and scuba dive, at your own risk of course. That being said, please do not attempt to swim by boat launch ramps and other designated areas. The daily parking rate per car is $6 on weekdays and $7 on the weekends and holidays.
In addition to the swim beach, day trippers also have access to large picnic pavilions where you can grill and enjoy the day. Not to mention there are playgrounds facilities for the kids and volleyball too.
The Fort Hamby Nature Trail Disc Golf Course is a new addition to the W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir Recreation Area. The course not only offers scenic views of the reservoir, but also features a backdrop of rolling mountains.
This dynamic 18-hole course utilizes long and short tee pads for novice and advanced players, and features water hazards, uphills and downhills, and dense wooded areas. You can access a map of the course here.
Another of the awesome outdoor activities at Kerr Scott is bird & wildlife watching. Birds in the area include wild turkey, woodpeckers, Carolina chickadees, red-eyed vireo, ovenbirds, mallards and wood ducks. Additionally you may have opportunities to see deer, rabbits are other furry critters.
Ranger-Led Trail Tours
Last but not least in regards to awesome outdoor activities at Kerr Scott are the educational options they provide. Not only can you visit the Environmental Education Center to learn more about the Ranger-led tours, but you can access programs in the center, at community events and in local schools. There are also many programs presented at the campgrounds during the summer that sometimes feature local guest speakers.
As a final point, pets are allowed except in park buildings and swim areas, but they must be on a leash no longer than six feet, even on a campsite, and cannot be left unattended.
