8 Fun Activities at Mount Trashmore – Virginia Beach

If you’re looking for something fun to do in Virginia Beach, then you’ve got to check out Mount Trashmore! Mount Trashmore opened in 1973 and is the nation’s first park built on a waste landfill. Recognized as an environmental wonder, Mount Trashmore Park also features many other eco-friendly amenities. There are so many fun activities at Mount Trashmore. The park features two lakes, a theater, and walking and jogging paths. But that’s not all! This 165-acre fun-filled park has something for everyone of any age.

Whether you live in the area or are on vacation, Mount Trashmore is a fantastic free or low-cost way to spend the day.

Fun Activities Mount Trashmore

1. Climb Mount Trashmore

Mount Trashmore is a fantastic free or low cost way to spend the day.

Well, one of the top fun activities at Mount Trashmore is to climb to the top! Children and adults alike have great fun climbing to the top and running down the 60-foot highest points of the mountain.

2. Enjoy a Picnic

With 11 picnic shelters in varying sizes, each with its own charcoal grill, you’l have no problem finding a space to picnic. Of course, I think the best location is on Mount Trashmore itself! So bring your picnic basket and a large blanket, and sit yourself down and enjoy beautiful views all around you while you eat.

3. Fly a Kite

The two machine-made mountains and the elevation possibilities at Mount Trashmore Park make it a great place to fly a kite. Additionally, on breezy days, you can see a multitude of kites hovering over the hill from a ways away. A wonderful way to feel like a kid again! Or better yet, teach your children about the joys of kite flying.

Let’s continue with more fun activities at Mount Trashmore, such as the Skate Park, fantastic playground, and kayaking.

4. Experience the Skate Park

The Skate Park at Mount Trashmore is a 24,000 square-foot skate park with a two-level half pipe of 5’ and 6’ heights and an attached quarter pipe.  The park also includes a 5’ spine, a 2.5’ rollover with grind rails, and a variety of arced and straight grind rails and boxes.  The skate park components are steel framed, with all ramps covered with Ramp Armor as the skating surface for skateboarders, inline skaters, and BMX bikers to enjoy.  Adjacent to the skate park is a competition-sized vert ramp that stands at a massive 13.5 feet tall and 40 feet wide. Helmets and protective pads are recommended. Patrons are expected to follow signs with rules and regulations also posted ​here. Additionally, all skate participants must sign up for a skate park pass.

5. Play on the Playgrounds

Children will love the Kids Cove! Of course, this is probably considered one of the most fun activities at Mount Trashmore. With almost 26,000 square feet, the playground features three different play areas built on a rubber surface, They include a giant play structure that offers a multitude of slides, elevated walkways, climbers and more. Plus there’s an area that has swings for all ages; and an area comprised of a variety of climbing structures. In addition to the above, families will find numerous benches and picnic areas around the playground. Kids Cove is also fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and is barrier-free to accommodate all children. (Courtesy of vbgov.com)

6. Kayak in Lake Windsor

Located just beyond Kids Cove is Lake Windsor (located along South Blvd.). It is a brackish water lake fed by Thalia Creek. For this reason, you are allowed to kayak Lake Windsor.

7. Go Fishing

Enjoy fishing at Mount Trashmore in Trashmore Lake

Lake Trashmore (located along Edwin Drive) is a freshwater lake that hosts various fish species. Fishing is permitted in Lake Trashmore, but one from the land. No boats, swimming, or wading are allowed. You will also need a fishing license. You can find all the details for a Virginia freshwater fishing​ license​ here.

8. Get in Shape

Not only can you run up and down Mount Trashmore for exercise, but there are ten outdoor fitness stations located around the Lake Trashmore trail. There are six LifeTrail stations for active, older adults to help improve posture and balance and increase strength. One of the LifeTrail stations is specifically for wheelchair-accessible activities. In addition, four Energi Prime stations create a total body fitness system to help you stretch and strengthen your muscles. Multiple activities are available at each station, and the exercises suit all fitness levels​.
