And fortunately for us Houstonians, Texas, with its vast expanse, offers plenty of getaway options. Whether you’re looking for tranquility amid nature, a taste of small-town charm, or a cultural excursion, Texas has you covered. So buckle up for an adventure as we explore some of the best weekend trips from Houston. You’ll be surprised at what lies just a short drive away!

City Trips From Houston
Austin
Distance: 165 miles
Live music, phenomenal food, and so much outdoor fun make Austin one of the best weekend road trips from Houston! Located in the hill country, Austin offers a nice change of scenery from the big city of Houston.
If you’re a history buff, then you can spend the weekend in the historic capital and learn more about Texas’ long and fascinating history, not only as a state, but as an independent country.
For those who like outdoor activities, there are plenty to choose from. Barton Springs pool is on my list in the summer months. Of course, there are plenty of nature options that you can enjoy. First, there is the Greenbelt, a winding 12+ mile trail where you can bike, hike, and swim. You can also visit Lady Bird Lake for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, one-way hiking, and biking. Alternatively, you can enjoy the panoramic city views from Mount Bonnell or have a lovely picnic at Zilker Park.
Dallas
Distance: 240 Miles
Dallas is another popular weekend road trip from Houston. This vibrant city offers something for everyone with a drive time of just over three and a half hours. From its rich Western heritage to its modern skyline, Dallas has it all.
In the historic West End district, you can visit Dealey Plaza, where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. You can also explore the Sixth Floor Museum, commemorating Kennedy’s life and legacy. For a taste of cowboy culture, head to the Fort Worth Stockyards for their daily cattle drive or catch an authentic rodeo at the Cowtown Coliseum.
For art enthusiasts, Dallas offers a range of museums and galleries, including the Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center. Foodies will also love exploring the city’s diverse dining scene, from upscale restaurants to food trucks.
Whether you’re looking for history, culture, or just a fun weekend getaway, Dallas is a terrific option.
San Antonio
Distance: 200 miles
A little further out than Austin and Dallas, but still a manageable drive at around three and a half hours in San Antonio. San Antonio is one of my favorite weekend trips from Houston. Each time you visit can be a different adventure. There is so much to see and do in San Antonio it’s hard to get bored.
First, you can spend an entire weekend exploring the San Antonio Missions. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the missions are well worth a visit. Of course, the most well-known is the Alamo, a former mission-turned-fortress where Texan soldiers bravely fought against Mexican forces in 1836. But there are five missions along the San Antonio River basin. They are historical gems and unique, and well worth a visit.
Then, you can head to the River Walk and stroll, take a boat ride, and have some of the finest Tex-Mex food on the planet. The River walk is a network of pedestrian walkways lined with restaurants, shops, and cafes.
Another great option is to explore the neighborhoods of San Antonio. My favorite is King William, where you can marvel at beautiful historic homes. You can also check out the HEB Grocery Stores Headquarters, formally a United States Arsenal from 1857 to 1949. You can also visit South Alamo Street for some phenomenal food trucks.
Of course, if you’re looking for thrills and chills, enjoy the day at Six Flags Fiesta Texas or SeaWorld.
Small Town Getaways
Fredricksburg
Distance: 250 miles
Another of the best weekend road trips from Houston is Fredricksburg. Situated in the heart of Hill Country, Fredricksburg is not only a relaxing place to visit, it also offers plenty to keep the adventurous busy. You will find wineries, museums, parks, festivals, and more to satisfy everyone’s taste.
In addition to laid-back activities, adventure enthusiasts will love Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, Old Tunnel State Park Bat Cove, and Cross Mountain Park. There are also plenty of options for horseback riding and cycling.
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is a popular spot for hiking, rock climbing, and stargazing. The main attraction is the massive pink granite dome that rises 425 feet above the park. Visitors can take guided walks to learn about the area’s geology and history or explore on their own.

For more rugged outdoor adventures, head to Old Tunnel State Park Bat Cove where you can watch millions of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from the old railroad tunnel at dusk. Or, if you prefer a more leisurely experience, take a scenic drive through the Bluebonnet Trail during spring when the famous Texas wildflowers are in full bloom.
Round Top
Round Top, Texas, is a vibrant and fun town between Houston and Austin. It is home to the nation’s largest antiques, vintage, and junk show held twice yearly. Its unique location makes it a central point for visiting great towns and attractions.
One of the best is Washington on the Brazos, better known as the birthplace of Texas. In addition, there are numerous lakes and state parks nearby, lovely historic towns, and some of the best food in Texas. Round Top is a beautiful option if you’re looking for a fun getaway for shopping, antiques, food, and history.
After a day of exploring, head to Royers Café for some famous pie and a delicious meal. If you’re up for it, stay in one of their cozy cabins or try glamping at The Wander Inn. Round Top is truly a unique and unforgettable destination that offers something for everyone.
Waco
Of course, everyone wants to visit Waco now because of Chip and Joanna Gaines Magnolia Market. Indeed, the market is a fun day for family and friends to enjoy. As a result of the popularity, it can be busy. However, it is not the only fun thing to do in Waco.
Alternatively, there are some other excellent options to explore in Waco. To start with, there is the Waco Mammoth National Monument. It is a paleontological site and museum where you can view Columbian Mammoths in their original positions within the bone bed where they were discovered.
Additionally, you can visit the Baylor University Campus, where you can visit the Baylor Bears, the school’s actual live mascots. Or, if you have children or history buffs in your family, check out the Mayborn Museum as well.
You also have the option to visit the Dr. Pepper Museum and the Waco Suspension Bridge and Riverwalk. Not only is the Waco Suspension Bridge the oldest suspension bridge still standing in Texas, but it is an excellent place for a stroll at the end of the day and to watch the sunset. All these cool things to do make Waco a marvelous weekend trip from Houston.
Brenham
Distance: 75 miles
Brenham is an inviting country town among South Central Texas’s sprawling farmlands and oak forests. This small community, located off Highway 290 between Austin and Houston, is home to the Blue Bell Creamery, a thriving arts scene, and its fair share of great shopping and dining.
But there are more things to do in Brenham than its great entertainment. Brenham is just a few miles from other cool towns like Burton known for their antique shopping and Chappel Hill known for their wineries, you can easily make a weekend out of exploring the area.
One of the highlights of Brenham is the Blue Bell Creamery, which has been churning out delicious ice cream since 1907. Take a tour of the factory and see how Blue Bell ice cream is made, then treat yourself to a scoop (or two) in their old-fashioned parlor.
For history buffs, Brenham has plenty to offer as well. Visit nearby Washington on the Brazos for a glimpse into Texas’ fight for independence and where they sign their declaration to become an independent country.
But what sets Brenham apart from other small towns is its variety of festivals and events. From the Texas Hot Sauce Festival to the German Heritage Festival, there’s always something happening in this vibrant community.
Outdoor Adventure Getaways from Houston
Huntsville State Park
Distance: 59 Miles
Just a breezy hour’s drive from the hustle and bustle of downtown Houston, you’ll find the tranquil retreat of Huntsville State Park. This verdant oasis spans over 2,000 acres, meticulously blanketed with luscious forests and sparkling lakes, offering a peaceful escape for those with a love for the great outdoors.
Whether you’re an avid hiker, a cycling enthusiast, an angler on the hunt for their next big catch, a swimmer seeking fresh waters, or a camper longing for a night under the stars, Huntsville has you covered. Adventure and serenity await at Huntsville State Park, your perfect getaway amid nature’s finest offerings.
Caddo Lake State Park
Distance: 234 Miles
Nestled on the border of Texas and Louisiana, Caddo Lake State Park is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. This beautiful park boasts the largest naturally formed lake in Texas with over 25,000 acres of cypress-filled waterways. Visitors can explore the lake by canoe, kayak, or boat while enjoying the abundant wildlife and serene atmosphere. The park also offers camping, fishing, and hiking opportunities for those who want to spend more time in nature.
Garner State Park
Distance: 285 Miles
Located in Concan, Texas, just a few hours drive from Houston, Garner State Park is a popular spot for outdoor adventure. The park sits on the Frio River and offers various water activities such as swimming, tubing, and kayaking. Visitors can also enjoy hiking, camping, and birdwatching in this scenic location. During the summer, Garner State Park hosts nightly dances where visitors can dance under the stars to live music.
Weekend Escapes from Houston to the Beach
Galveston Island
Distance: 60 miles
Since Galveston is just a short hour’s ride from Houston, it is first on my list. It’s also one of my favorite beach towns. It’s got something for everyone, laid back and easy. Not to mention that the Historic downtown area has so many beautiful buildings that survived the horrific storm of 1900. Which makes it great for a lovely evening stroll to admire them. In addition to the history, you can enjoy a ghost tour after a scrumptious seafood meal.
Of course, enjoying some fun in the sun is the perfect way to spend a day in Galveston. Not only can you lay on the long stretches of white sandy beaches, you can also walk, bike, and rollerblade along the Seawall. Galveston Island is also a great weekend retreat for families. In addition to everything already mentioned, Galveston also has Schlitterbahn Water Park, Pleasure Pier, and Moody Gardens to enjoy!
All these reasons and more make Galveston Island a top weekend road trip.
South Padre Island
Distance: 380 miles
South Padre Island is another of the best weekend trips from Houston. That being said, South Padre is a longer drive than the previous locations, but to enjoy a little piece of beach heaven makes it worth the trip. Indeed, with 34 miles of white sand and clear emerald waters, South Padre Island is the crown jewel of Texas beachfront.
Fun activities are easy to find on South Padre Island. Not only can you relax on miles of beautiful beaches, but there are fun activities for adventure seekers, nature lovers, and children and families as well. For instance, boating, fishing, diving, surfing, kiteboarding, and simply lounging on the beach. Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark is also located on the island. Of course, you could also spend the day learning to build an epic sandcastle.
South Padre also offers opportunities to explore history with a visit to the Port Isabel Historical Museum and the Treasures of the Gulf Museum and some amazing seafood.
Short Flight Getaways from Houston
New Orleans
Distance: 1 Hour Flight
Last but not least, New Orleans is probably the most popular of the exciting weekend trips from Houston. I mean, it is the Big Easy! New Orleans is exciting and fun, and there is something for everyone.
You can easily escape to New Orleans for entertainment and nightlife or enjoy a weekend of some of the best food in the USA. My favorite thing to do is enjoy walking tours and learning about the splendid architecture’s history and the city itself. It’s hard to get bored in New Orleans because you can enjoy the arts, jazz, ghost tours, shopping, and countless festivals throughout the year. It’s a favorite escape from Houston for all these reasons and more.
Miami, Florida
Distance: 2.5 Hour Flight
Another great short-flight getaway from Houston is Miami. Known for its trendy nightlife, beautiful beaches, and warm weather, Miami is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Spend your days lounging on the beach or exploring the vibrant Art Deco district. And at night, hit up some of the hottest clubs and restaurants in town.
Miami also offers many cultural attractions, including museums, galleries, and historic landmarks. Plus, with its close proximity to the Everglades, you can easily take a day trip to explore the unique ecosystem and see some of Florida’s famous wildlife. And let’s not forget about the delicious Cuban food that Miami is known for – be sure to try some authentic dishes while you’re there!
Las Vegas, Nevada
Distance: 3.5 Hour Flight
If you’re feeling lucky, why not take a weekend trip to Las Vegas? Just a short flight from Houston, this glamorous city is known for its endless entertainment options. There’s never a dull moment in Vegas, from world-famous casinos and shows to luxurious hotels and restaurants.
But you don’t have to be a high roller or party animal to enjoy Las Vegas. You can also take advantage of the beautiful desert scenery by hiking or visiting one of the nearby national parks. And for those who are interested in history, there are also several museums and exhibits that showcase the city’s fascinating past.
No matter what your interests may be, Las Vegas offers something for everyone. So why not plan a weekend getaway to this exciting destination? Just be sure to pack your sunscreen and dancing shoes!
Cabo San Lucas
Distance: 3 Hour Flight
Cabo San Lucas is a great option if you need to escape from it all, and it is one of my favorite escapes from Houston.
Located on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, this popular vacation spot has stunning beaches and crystal-clear water. Imagine spending your days soaking up the sun or trying out various water sports such as snorkeling, parasailing, or jet skiing.
But there’s more to Cabo San Lucas than just beaches. The town also has a lively nightlife scene, with numerous bars and clubs to choose from. Head over the the Marina area and you will find plenty of options to keep you busy.
And for those looking for a more cultural experience, there are plenty of historic sites and local markets to explore.
With its warm weather and laid-back atmosphere, Cabo San Lucas is the perfect place to unwind and recharge. So grab your swimsuit and head south for a relaxing vacation in this beautiful Mexican destination!
