What is Houston Known For?
As the largest city in Texas, Houston is known for being a significant oil and gas industry hub. Not to mention, it is a significant part of our country’s space exploration, with the NASA Space Center.
Additionally, Houston is one of America’s most dynamic, culturally diverse, and friendly cities. Oh yeah, and don’t forget the food! As a local, I can tell you this city has every type of food imaginable! And it will probably be some of the best you’ve ever tasted!
How to get around Houston?
While Houston does have a mass transit bus system, it is primarily for commuting to and from downtown Houston. Houstonians rely mainly on their cars to get around. If you’re visiting Houston and planning to explore, renting a car is your best bet. Uber or Lyft will work if you’re staying in a particular area only, such as downtown, the Galleria area, or the Medical Center. Rideshare can get expensive if you want to visit many of the hidden gems in Houston.
Is Houston Safe?
Safety is always an important consideration when traveling. Like any large metropolitan city, Houston has its share of challenges. While many neighborhoods are safe and family-friendly, some have higher crime rates. However, it’s all about being aware of your surroundings and practicing common-sense safety precautions. As a local, I can tell you that Houston is full of friendly folks, rich cultural experiences, and delicious cuisine that shouldn’t be missed!
Top Hidden Gems in Houston, Texas
Space Center Houston
Space Center Houston has something for everyone to enjoy. Its primary focus is to be a fun and interactive educational center and a space museum. The Space Center continuously updates its exhibits and offers many unique events yearly. One of the most remarkable features at the Space Center is the fascinating collection of Moon rocks and samples astronauts brought back from the Moon. Additionally, tours at the Space Center allow visitors to see astronaut training centers and Mission Control. Space Center Houston is definitely one of the best places to visit in Houston.
Hermann Park
Hermann Park is a beautiful park just a short ride from downtown Houston. It is also home to the Houston Zoo and the Miller Outdoor Theatre. One of my favorite parts of Hermann Park is the Japanese Garden. It is impressive, to say the least. Families can experience a full day of fun by riding the train, taking a pedal boat ride, feeding the ducks, and having a picnic. There are trails to explore and even a golf course. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, Hermann Park is a great hidden gem in Houston.
Houston Zoo
If you’re already exploring Hermann Park, consider visiting the Houston Zoo. The zoo features more than 6,000 animals, including elephants, big cats, zebras, reptiles, animals of the African forest, birds, and more. There’s even a section devoted to the animals of the Texas wetlands. Children will love the zoo’s interactive kids section, keeping them busy. Moreover, the zoo offers special activities like giraffe feedings and a water play park. The Houston Zoo also features numerous seasonal activities as well, so there is something cool going on year-round. The zoo is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day except Christmas.
Miller Outdoor Theatre
Also located in Herman Park is the Miller Outdoor Theatre, another of Houston’s hidden gems. Miller Outdoor Theatre is a unique and special treat because they offer an eight-month season of fantastic entertainment, not to mention free of charge. You heard correctly that Miller Outdoor Theatre is the country’s largest, always free operation. The venue hosts various performances that cover all types of music, dance, plays, and even classic films. This is also a very family-friendly activity because of the utterly free programming and being located outside.
Stroll Houston’s Historic Downtown
Downtown Houston has a beautiful historic district to explore. It is definitely one of the cool places to see on your visit as well. Many people don’t realize that downtown Houston has incredibly well-preserved historic buildings.
These lovely gems each have their own story to tell. City Hall and the historic 1910 Harris County Courthouse are a few to mention. They are both photo-worthy opportunities both in the daytime and at night. In addition, you may also happen upon the old Humble Oil Building, the Icon Hotel, or the Gulf Building. Additionally, the Market Square Historic District is not to be missed.
Houston Murals
Instagrammable spots are hot on everyone’s list when visiting a large city. Houston has many of these spots, but the beauty and diversity created by some highly talented street artists seem like the best place to start. You can find amazing murals throughout the city, but the largest group will be in Downtown Houston.
Begin with the Houston Graffiti Wall at Chartres Street and Bell Street. With all its beautiful colors, this iconic treasure speaks to the city’s diversity. From there, you can explore more fantastic art on St. Emanuel Street and Leeland Street. Of course, please remember that you are in a large urban city, and some areas may not be as desirable as others. That said, I grew up in Houston, have spent a lot of time downtown, and have never felt unsafe.
Buffalo Bayou
Buffalo Bayou Park is one of my favorite hidden gems in Houston. You can walk, run, or bike on numerous trails. In addition to featuring a skateboarding park, a nature-inspired playground, and a picnic pavilion, there is a tributary, a dog park, and the Houston Police Officers’ Memorial as well.
Another fantastic find in Buffalo Bayou Park is the Cistern. The Cistern was one of the first drinking water reservoirs for the citizens of Houston. After decades of use, a significant leak was discovered that couldn’t be fixed, so the city of Houston stopped using it in 2007.
Today, the Cistern has been transformed into an art form for everyone to enjoy. History and Experiential tours are offered weekly, but there are also tours in Spanish and private tours available. There are also special events like the Cistern Illuminated during the holiday season, and the Underground Sounds musical performances throughout the year. You can find out more by clicking here.
Bonus tip: if you’re looking to save a little money, tours of the Cistern are free on the first Thursday of the month.
Downtown Aquarium
The kids will think the Downtown Aquarium is one of the best places in Houston. This family-friendly entertainment and dining complex is an aquatic wonderland. It’s not only home to over 300 species of aquatic life but also features educational, aquatic, and geographic exhibits. Additionally, there are fun amusement rides the kids will adore!
Discovery Green
Discovery Green is a small park, but it is packed with amenities for both the young and the young at heart. Not only will the kids enjoy the playground and two fountain areas, but there are many more activities for everyone to love. Additionally, the park features a lake with kayak rides, a jogging trail, and a dog park. Discovery Green is also home to many festivals and even movies on the green. Discovery Green is a great place to hang out and have an extraordinary outdoor adventure in the middle of a large metropolis.
Sam Houston Park
Sam Houston Park is one of my favorite parks in downtown Houston, Texas, and was developed in 1900. It is the first park in Houston. One of Houston’s early mayors, Sam Brashier, purchased the land for the park.
The result is a treasure for the city of Houston. Not only will you find buildings representative of many eras, but you can learn a lot about the early immigrants who made Houston their home, as well as how diverse the city was even then. There is also an impressive mansion in the park dating back to 1905.
Float in a Texas Shaped Lazy River
Oh yes, if you can, you must! Located at the Marriott Marquis Houston, this is not only enjoyable but also a great way to escape the heat and relax. The 6th-floor pool deck also includes a full-size pool, Jacuzzi, cabana rentals, and a full bar service. All of this is included if you are staying at the Marriott Marquis. But if not, they offer day passes starting at $50 for this one-of-a-kind experience. The hotel is centrally located downtown across from the George R. Brown Convention Center. It’s within walking distance of Minute Maid Park and many other downtown attractions.
Houston Children Museum
Another fantastic place for families with children to see is the Houston Children’s Museum. This fun-filled museum has interactive exhibits for children of all ages. As a result, there are exhibits for toddlers through elementary school. As a matter of fact, this is a beautiful rainy-day option or something cool to do during hot Houston summers for families with children. The museum is closed on Mondays, and admission is $17 for both kids and adults. You can also use the Houston CityPass for discounted admission.
The Galleria
The Galleria is Houston’s showcase and most significant mall. If you’re looking for a little retail therapy, you will love the Galleria. Not only does the Galleria have over 400 stores, but it is also home to hotels, restaurants, a theatre, and a full-size indoor ice skating rink as well. In addition, there are beauty salons, tailors, children’s play areas, banks, and a post office. The Galleria is not necessarily a hidden gem, but it is one of Houston’s most popular tourist spots.
Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park
Of course, if you’re looking for great Instagram photo locations, one is a few blocks behind the Galleria. Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park is a beautifully crafted 64-foot Water wall and a spectacular photo backdrop. The cascading waterfall is an impressive site to behold. Additionally, the park also occupies a lovely space for kids to run around or for a group picnic.
Houston Museum District
Houston’s Museum District is the city’s most significant cultural asset. This district features 19 museums, which include popular spots such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, The Menil Collection, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Thanks to its diverse offerings, about 7 million people visit annually, not to mention that admission to 11 of the 19 museums available is accessible year-round.
Unique & Weird Things to See in Houston
The Beer Can House
The Beer Can House is just one of the quirky hidden gems in Houston to visit if you have the chance. John Milkovisch is the man behind this unique architectural creation. He began transforming the house in 1968. 20 years later, the house was covered entirely in flattened beer cans. I’m not sure why Mr. Milkovisch decided to do this, but I believe he just decided it would be fun and creative one day. Even if you can’t tour the house, just stopping by and hearing it sing is worth the time, not to mention an excellent picture.
Art Car Museum
The Art Car Museum is another of the beautiful hidden gems you will find in Houston. The museum opened in 1998 and features all sorts of automobiles. You can spend the afternoon marveling at low riders, derby racers, and hippie vans. There are even some cool police cruisers. The best part of the Art Car Museum is how beautifully adorned some of them are. Some have been colorfully painted and bedazzled. At the same time, others have become intriguing art installations. This place is just too cool to be missed!
National Museum of Funeral History
A visit to Houston would not be complete without a stop at the National Museum of Funeral History. This unique museum provides a fascinating insight into the rich history of saying goodbye to our loved ones. Opened in 1992, it houses the country’s largest collection of funeral service artifacts. There are a variety of exciting exhibits to explore. A few notable ones are a Vintage Hearse exhibit and a Day of the Dead exhibit celebrating the colorful traditions of Latin America. Additionally, a Presidential Funerals exhibit offers a glimpse into the passing ceremonies for U.S. leaders. With its intriguing mix of history, science, and art, the National Museum of Funeral History offers a captivating journey through our country’s traditions of remembrance and the celebration of life.
The Orange Show
The Orange Show is undoubtedly one of Houston, Texas’s most whimsical and beloved landmarks. This magical place is a tribute to the orange fruit, and it was the dream child of a local postman, Jeff McKissack, who believed in the health benefits of oranges. He transformed a small suburban lot near his home into an epic monument to his favorite fruit from 1956 until completion in 1979. Visiting The Orange Show is like stepping into a fantastical dream. It’s a place where imagination runs wild, creativity is alive, and the spirit of individualism is honored. It truly is a testament to Houston’s vibrancy and quirky charm. The Orange Show is open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with an entry fee of $5.
Smither Park
Smither Park is located next to the Orange Show. Much like The Orange Show, it’s a testament to the city’s vibrant and imaginative spirit. Visionary artist and builder Dan Phillips created the park along with Stephanie Smither, who wanted to commemorate the creativity of her late husband, John H. Smither. Since its beginning, artists and community members have transformed this green space into an ever-evolving art park. The park features many exhibits of mosaic-covered structures, all created from recycled and found materials. Each piece of art tells a different story, mirroring Houston’s eclectic and diverse culture. Smither Park is open from Dawn to Dusk daily and is free to visit.
Twilight Epiphany Skyspace
Houston has more to offer in its treasure trove of unique spaces with Twilight Epiphany Skyspace, designed by world-renowned artist James Turrell. This architectural marvel, located on the campus of Rice University, is not your everyday skyspace.
