There’s a unique wonder to Texas, matched only by its beautiful landscapes and the warm hospitality of its people. But Texas isn’t just any state; it has its own unique and fabulous story. You probably think you know many things about Texas, but I promise you some things might surprise you. The state’s rich history and vibrant present lead to many fun facts about Texas that will pique your interest.
Not only is Texas the second largest state, after Alaska, but it is also the second most populous state, after California. Texas is also bigger than every country in Europe except for Russia. Not to mention that if Texas were a country, it would be the 40th largest country in the world.
Texas is as diverse as it is significant. Therefore, I will share some fun facts about Texas that will intrigue you and inspire you to want to know more.

Historical Facts About Texas
Texas won its independence from Mexico on April 21st, 1836, after defeating Santa Anna’s army in less than 20 minutes. However, the Texas army was outnumbered entirely and should not have won the battle. How did they do it? Well, Sam Houston launched the attack at 3:30 in the afternoon, with his army coming at full force, yelling, “Remember the Alamo. As a result, most of Santa Anna’s men were enjoying a siesta, and were caught completely by surprise and never stood a chance. This is one of the fun facts about Texas that I loved learning in school.
Another of the fun facts about Texas is that it is the only state that was an independent nation. It stood alone from 1836-1845.
In 1845, Texas became the 28th State in the Union. Most noteworthy is that Texas is unique to all the other states because it entered the union by treaty, not by annexation.
Other fun facts about Texas are related to it being a country. First, Texas retained the right to fly its flag at the same height as the national flag. In addition, Texas owns all its public lands. This means the U.S. government has to ask permission to build anything on Texas-owned land.
The word “Texas” was the Spanish pronunciation of “Tejas” of the Hasinai Indian word meaning “allies” or “friends.” In fact, the Texas state motto is “friendship.”
Juneteenth, the federal holiday celebrating freedom for enslaved people, started in Texas.
The deadliest Natural disaster in U.S. history was the devastating hurricane that hit Galveston, Texas in 1900. Consequently, somewhere between 8,000 to 12,000 people did not survive. During that time, it was difficult to know the exact number, but even the smallest amount was far worse than any other natural disaster in American history.
Remains of a 14,000 year old home, found near Austin, are thought to be the oldest house in the United States.
People of Texas
The Texas Rangers are North America’s oldest law enforcement agency with statewide jurisdiction. Also, John Wayne, Chuck Norris, Will Rogers, and former President George H.W. Bush were all honorary Rangers.
Sam Houston was the first president of Texas, and also the first governor. While Sam Houston is considered one of the most famous Texans, he was actually from Virginia. Even more interesting is the world’s tallest statue to honor an American is of Sam Houston.
Another remarkable fact about Texas is that Dr. Pepper was invented by Charles Alderton (1857-1941), a Waco pharmacist, in 1885.
Two American presidents were born in Texas. They are Dwight. D. Eisenhower and Lyndon B. Johnson.
This following fact is pretty cool if you love Bugs Bunny! Tex Avery, who created Bugs Bunny, was from Texas. While in high school, it was common for kids to call each other “Doc,” being slang for “Dude.” So they would greet each other by saying “Hiya Doc” or “What’s Up Doc?” It’s pretty cool that Bugs Bunny’s famous catchphrase originated in Texas!
One of my Mom’s favorite cool facts about Texas is that the Houston Comets are the only WNBA team to take home four back-to-back WNBA championships.
Culture
The most prominent official sport in Texas is Rodeo.
Texas’ nickname, the “Lone Star State,” reminds us of its struggle for independence from Mexico and to represent Texas as an independent republic.
The most popular snack food in Texas is the Frito pie, which is a bag of Fritos with chili, onions, and cheese eaten straight from the bag.
Furthermore, Texas is the only state with six flags of six nations flown over it in its history. This includes the United States, the Republic of Texas, the Confederacy, France, Spain, and Mexico. As a result, Six Flags theme parks got their name from this historical fact since the first park opened in Arlington, Texas, in 1961.
Texas is also known for “Tex-Mex” food. It combines Texan and Mexican cuisine, including nachos, fajitas, burritos, and hard tacos.
Austin is considered the “Live Music Capital of the World.”
Texas German is a dialect of German that can only be heard in Texas. Although it is almost extinct, it is still spoken by some Germans in Texas.
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the largest rodeo in the world. Not surprisingly, Texas held the world’s first Rodeo.
Infrastructure & Resources
Because Texas is so big, it has its own power grid. There are three power grids in the United States. One is for the East, one is for the West, and one is for Texas.
Texas is North America’s leading producer of crude oil. In addition, if Texas were an independent nation, it would be the 5th largest oil producer in the world.
Cattle are another natural resource that Texas is famous for. Texas is home to more than 12 million cattle, more than any other state in the U.S. Texas also has more deer than any other state.
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport’s parking lot is the largest in the world.
Approximately 90% of the world’s recoverable helium is in the ground under Amarillo, Texas, thus making Amarillo the “Helium Capital of the World.”
Texas is home to three of the largest cities in America: Houston (4th), San Antonio (7th), and Dallas/Fort Worth (9th). Watch out, America; Austin is #11!
Texas is home to two national parks: Big Bend National Park and Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
Texas is a leading producer of Wine.
Interesting Facts About Texas
The Texas State Capital Building, located in Austin, is the largest state capital building in the United States. Another interesting fact about the Texas State Capitol is that its dome stands seven feet taller than the nation’s Capitol in Washington, D.C.
The state flower is the bluebonnet, the state mammal is the armadillo, and the state bird is the mockingbird.
King Ranch in South Texas is larger than the entire state of Rhode Island.
Buc-ee’s, a Texas-born convenience store chain and my favorite holds the world record for the largest convenience store and the longest car wash in the world.
Texas also has the largest rose garden in the nation, located in Tyler, Texas. There are 450 types of roses on the 14-acre property.
In Norwegian slang, “Texas” means “crazy.”
It is also illegal to milk someone else’s cow in Texas or to shoot a buffalo from the second floor of a hotel.
Likewise, allowing camels to run loose on the beach in Galveston, Texas, is illegal.
Of course, it is entirely legal to shoot Bigfoot if you happen to catch him in your backyard.
The first word spoken from the moon on July 20, 1969, was Houston.
Austin is home to the world’s largest urban bat colony located under the Congress Avenue Bridge over Lady Bird Lake. In addition, the largest known bat colony in North America is in Bracken Cave, Texas. Over 20 million bats reside in Bracken Cave.
Texas also has the highest speed limit in the country at 85 mph.
Also, Athens, Texas, claims to be the birthplace of the hamburger.
One last fun fact about Texas is that it has its own dinosaur. The Paluxysaurus Jonesi, cousin of the Brachiosaurus, is named for the town of Paluxy, Texas, and Jones Ranch, where its fossils were found.
